Huge Delay in Outlook 2016

I have a problem with the latest Office 365 Business upgrade to Office 2016 client applications.  The problem appears to occur when accessing non-Office 365 Exchange servers.

Switching to a different message, a different folder in the same email account, or switching to a different email account is quite responsive when the activities are taking place on mailboxes belonging to my Office 365 account.

However, trying to switch to an email account that is hosted on my customer's Exchange server takes 10-30 seconds and the title bar reports 'Outlook (Not Responding)'.  There are similar delays when switching between folders and messages in the account hosted on the customer's server.

I've tried creating a new profile, but the problem persists.

Is this problem likely to be related to the version of Exchange server being run by my customer?  How can I overcome this issue?  I cannot expect my customer to change their email platform in any way.
