Corrupted or missing ost file in Office 2007 wasn't fixed by upgrading to Office 2010

It's been a tough 24 hours. My Outlook 2007 wouldn't open because it detected errors in Outlook.ost, recommending I activate scanpst.exe to repair the file(s).  Couldn't find scanpst.exe, let alone a file labeled Outlook.ost, anywhere in my HD.  Tried buying a 3rd party app, which did manage to identify archived pst's from 3 years ago, which didn't solve squat. I decided this morning to bite the bullet and buy Office 2010 Home (64-bit), in order to get a fresh install, figuring at the very least I could synchronize my contacts from my iPhone, and my business emails from my Exchange server.  Office 2010 loaded fine, but when I tried open Outlook to configure it, the same exact message about ost came up, so I now own a $300 version of office, and I have no clue how to get this to work.
