Cannot Display the Folder

 I have had nothing but problems since my computer automatically updated my windows version.  After working just fine, all of a sudden Outlook cannot open my Inbox.  The message is "Cannot display the folder. Microsoft Office Outlook cannot access the specified folder location. The messaging interface has returned an unknown error. If the problem persists, restart Outlook. Outlook cannot open this item. The item may be damaged."

Any suggestions? 


Schedule View in Outlook 2016 Calendar - Hover to reveal details

Good morning!

In all other calendar views in Outlook 2016 you can hover over the appointment/meeting to bring up a peek to show more details.

However, in Schedule View, this functionality is not on.

Is there a way to enable this?

We can't open 'file_location.msg'. It's possible the file is already open, or you don't have permission to open it.

We are having issues with Outlook 2016 (365) opening saved msg files. You can open the file once, but subsequent opens result in the above error message. Closing Outlook and reopening allows you to open the msg file again.

If Outlook isn't open, you can open/close the file as many times as you want without issue.

Tried opening Outlook in safe mode (outlook.exe /safe) and issue still present. Doesn't seem to be related to Com Add-in as originally suspected.

Any ideas as to what is causing this? Seems to be happening to all machines.

Win7, 8, 10 Pro with Outlook 2016 (365).

Outlook 2016 Action Items add-in not working

Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2016 and Windows 10 Pro on Surface Pro 3 connected to Exchange 2016:

When an email arrives that triggers an Action Item, clicking the add-in which says, "We think we've found an action item", causes the following error in the Action Items box: "The add-in wasn't loaded correctly.  Please try again later."

The add-in is active both on the Outlook client and on the Exchange server.  

The add-in functions correctly with a Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2013 Outlook client.

Hello, one of my users is having a reoccurring problem with Outlook crashing. This was happening on their previous computer and is now happening on their new computer.

Basic specs on the computer, Dell OptiPlex 9020, Windows 7 Pro SP1, Core i7, 16GB ram, Office 2010 Professional Plus.

I have done new Outlook Profiles, new Windows profiles, a complete rebuild of a new computer. She will be working in Outlook, it will freeze and then shut down. There are two entries in the event viewer.

I then received an answer from Henry Huang MSFT Support:

"Hi Joannel,

According to the description, a possible cause of the issue could be that the profile is broken. So the issue persists after you rename the profile.

To identify it, please try creating a new profile and set it as the default one. Then start Outlook to see if it hangs. If not, please try reparing the Outlook data file and check whether the issue can be resolved:

If Outlook still hangs when being opened with the new profile, it should be an Outlook client issue. For this situation, I suggest you post a thread in the Outlook IT Pro Forum  to get the dedicated assistance. Your understanding is appreciated. Best Regards,

I did perform both of his suggestions prior to sending my email off but said what the heck, Ill try it again. Still same exact result. ANY help is appreciated.

Reply Email with Picture appear "OLE Object: Picture (Device Independent Bitmap)"

Receive a Rich Text format email.  There is a picture embeded in the message body.  When press a Reply button, the picture will become a sentence "<<OLE Object: Picture (Device Independent Bitmap)>>".

But when press the Forward button, the picture will not change to a sentence.

Any one know how to fix it and can tell why will have this problem?

Pop account vanished all of a sudden while exchange account to the company's mail server is still listed.

On a notebook not used for a few weeks and Win10 installed, Microsoft pushed a few updates once it was turned on again to the OS and Office 365. After all of the updates were completed and the workstation rebooted, Outlook only showed the main (standard) eMail account in Outlook.  The 2ndary POP eMail account which was working perfectly is now not visible in the left hand pane anymore and I did not find a way to make it re-appear.

The missing account is still correctly listed in the list of mail accounts when looking at the account configuration settings dialog, however, once returned to the mailbox view, only the company's Exchange account is left.

I have not yet tried to create a new profile since this can mess up Outlook even more. Did anyone experience something similar and has a less intrusive suggestion than restoring an old safe or creating a new profile or mailbox?

It's the PRF automation process described here:

This process seems broken.  It looks like the PRF import only works if you run it as an administrator, meaning you would need to give all your users local admin on their machine for it to work.  Am I missing something?


Creating Contact Group in a Shared Contact

I am helping out an Admin Assistant at my company. Her boss has shared her contacts with the Admin so she can create and edit contacts as requested by the boss.

The problem is that the Admin is unable to create contact groups within the boss's contact list. She can click on the boss's contact list and click on the "New Contact Group" option, but it always gets made under the Admins contact list.

She is also unable to view the boss' contacts in the drop-down address list; but from what I've read this feature is not built into Outlook 2016.

All Day Calendar Events and Different Time Zones

What are best practices for dealing with All Day Events in different time zones. So if an all day event for July 5 is set as EST. In the shared calendar it is will span two days in MST. 10pm-10pm the next day. 

Can anyone recommend best practice or modifications that can be made to handle this.

Hello Everybody,

I am the Exchange Admin of my company.

My company has an exchange server 2013. and my people use Outlook 2010 and 2013

Some people have found a "new MS Feature" or a bug.

I have checked myself and it's weird.

On Calendar view, right click on someone else's calendar with no particular sharing rights.Try to create a new Meeting request.

In Outlook 2010 and previous versions it was possible to do so !!

I can create a New Meeting Request in other people's calendar  in Outlook 2010

I cannot create a a New Meeting Request (greyed out) in other people's calendar  in Outlook 2013 or 2016

Unfortunately I cannot upload any pictures right now :(

As soon as I get my account verified I will upload the pictures

Any Ideas ? Bug or Feature ?

How can I fix this ?

Outlook 2013 windows 7 pop3 ssl not working

I am trying to get ssl working in Outlook 2013 in Windows 7, but I keep getting errors.  I installed Thunderbird and ssl works, and I have a windows 10 computer with Outlook 2013 and it works in it also.  Is there a Windows 7 Outlook update maybe causing the problem?

To summarize - move takes between 0 and 30 seconds when you have a search in place.  The GUI doesn't update, so appears not to work.  Catagories don't show correctly with search, just a single empty square.  I seem to be on the deferred on Office 365 - can I tweak my settings to get on current to see if that fixes it.  TIA.

Initial Q with additional items:

Background

We have an office 365 subscription - I was actually on office 2010/13 (can't remember which) and was getting the nag yellow bar everytime I was changing mailbox telling me to upgrade to office 2016 - which I did.

I triage hundreds of e-mails a day and have gaps between initiation and conclusion - so to this end i use search extensively.  I have 5K e-mails in a folder (1todo) which require some action or an answer at some point.  The folder and main account is on office 365 (i.e. MS's hosted product) All e-mails get 1 or more project numbers.  My use case was:

- receive an e-mail 

- check / add project number

- use search to find all e-mails that are int the same project

- depending on what I can do from there, reply & file as many of the e-mails as I can in the relevant folder

So this worked perfectly in office 2013.  Now in Outlook 2016 the e-mails don't appear to move, you can: drag / right click move / have a quick step to do it.  All used to work.  So this is 2 bugs - one the search doesn't refresh and also it appears the move doesn't always work.

You keep on executing the command and at some point it works BUT it still shows in the folder.  I have read threads elsewhere that say the same and talk about getting different builds of office.  Mine says it is completely up to date. It is 16.0.6001.1073 Office 365 pro plus

This bug has made my working practices completely inefficient and I need to get it resolved.  Is there a fix / fast work around / way to get a later version that fixes it, does the bug have a name / number?

Less important, but still pretty important to me is that catagories aren't shown in the results grid.  I use these extensively.

Follow up from me:

Move from folder:

  • What happens when you try to move the emails using different option? Are you receiving any error message?

Nothing:

using Quick Steps - (quick step is to move to another folder) - you click, nothing changes

highlight a different row and back to the original (if you do within a couple of secs, nothing, but if you wait for a while then click it, in the preview you get "this item cannot be displayed in the reading pane". The row in the e-mail list stays forever - if you change scope to all folders and back again it is gone.

It took 27 seconds between the click and it to disappear from the preview for another test.  So I suspect either polling / syncing or async command actually being issued.

Right click Move / ctrl + shift + V = same as above. 

  • What happens when you try to search the emails? Does it shows any related emails

you mean from a standing start - yes, search finds them all correctly.

  • Did you tried rebuilding the index for Outlook?

Good idea, but I am 100% sure this isn't an index issue.  I have to rebuild the index from time to time as the .edb eat my spare disk. 

Additional info:

Ok, some afters, based on working on it:

- it appears that the item does move eventually, between 0s and 30 sec later.  There is no feedback to tell you it has happened.

- the GUI in the grid is not refreshed, you have to do something, there is no refresh button :-(

-It only occurs with Exchange Online mailbox, my normal POP3 is instant.

-one of the confusions about whether the command worked at all, is it appears, you must let the first async move work first, you don't know when it has worked, but if you move another one, it seems to then do nothing.

Workaround:

- search

- do the move

- wait

- click off and on until you get the preview error

- change search / folder 

- re-search

As you can see, this has gone from efficiently see e-mail, find all for same project, action all that you can and move, to treacle.

Finally: the catagories are still a problem - i.e. in search, not shown.

can you tell me what I need to change on my install (registry or whatever) to get onto the current release rather than the deferred, then at least I will be testing the latest.

Unable to set outlook as default

Hi

I am using MS office 2013. When i try to set MS outlook as my default i get the error above, i have tried to delete the registry key and sub-key but still is not working. i also uninstalled MS office and repaired MS office but still i am not succeeding kindly assist i am desperate. I get the following error "Either there is no default mail client or the current mail client cannot fulfill the message request"


Word experienced an error trying to open this file when opening a Word doc in Outlook 2016

I receive this error in Outlook 2016 when opening a Word file (.doc & .docx). When I try to open Outlook as an admin there are no email accounts. Nothing.

I am running Windows 10.

I presume to resolve my problem opening Word docs is to add it as a trusted publisher/trusted location but I can't do it even when running as an admin.

When I save a word file say on my Desktop I receive the same error.

Any suggestions to open Outlook as admin to my normal single email account or the ability to open Word files in Outlook is appreciated.

Hello, I'm in the unfortunate position of having to deploy a CAS Array after people have been using the environment for ages (don't look at me, I inherited this.)

I'm trying to push the CAS Array to user profiles through GPO.  I have one for 2013, one for 2010, and one for 2007, and I've created GPO preferences to create the ImportPRF key and delete any FirstRun or First-Run keys.  The PRF is set to Modify Profile, Define changes to the existing default profile, and then add an account called %UserName%@company.com, username %UserName%, Exchange Server Outlook.company.com, Overwrite Existing Exchange Accounts, Deliver new maile to this account, Default E-mail location this account.  

Section 1 of the 2013 PRF looks like:
