Emails appearing in Chinese and other characters

Hi - at the moment we have one user who is experiencing a very strange issue: random emails seem to be appearing in a whole swathe of Chinese characters, mixed with other characters. Some emails are OK, and others are completely unreadable. This has only started happening in the last couple of days since the Outlook update.

No settings have changed. I use IMAP. Any suggestions?

How to download Offline Address Book on Outlook by force

I know my offline address book has been downloaded every 24 hours.

The Send/Receive - Send/Receive Group - Address Book Download menu has been identified as a forceddownload, but it is questionable whether there is a way to apply it collectively to multiple users.

I wonder if a batch file, registry, or GPO can be implemented.

0x80040600 unknown error in Outlook 2013

I HAVE REVIEWED OTHER QUESTIONS AND ADVICE ABOUT THIS ERROR.

We are seeing a send/receive error in Outlook 2013, details are "Unknown error 0x80040600".  The problem is preventing send and receive of email to certain accounts, while permitting it to other accounts.

Virtually all questions and all advice found so far relates to earlier versions of Outlook, and the advice for dealing with the error cannot be followed here.  For example, the SCANPST.EXE program does not appear to be on the affected system, so we can't repair the PST file as advised.  If a new PST file is created and made default, we cannot import messages from the old file as advised... Outlook will appear to be working for hours on updating it when we mount it and try to open it, but will not display any items in it.

Yesterday, it did this on one of about ten email accounts managed by this Outlook client, the others continued to send/receive just fine.  We eventually restored a backup of the PST file and lost a couple of days of email, but everything worked fine again.  Minutes ago, Outlook began reporting the same error with a different account.

Help please!  Thanks for any advice or ideas.

Outlook 2016 UI transparency bug

I'm using Outlook 2016 64-bit. Often, when switching to or maximizing the Outlook window, there'll be a UI glitch that makes elements of the interface transparent. You can see in the sample image. Disabling hardware graphics accelerationdoes not solve the problem, contrary to some suggestions. My Outlook is apparently up-to-date.  I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling, and applying repairs or fixes, but nothing seems to work.  Any suggestions on how to solve this are greatly appreciated.

Use Outlook 365 for Mac [version 16.27] to archive emails to hard drive

I am trying to save old emails to an archive that sits on my iMac hard drive - rather than an archive that sits on a Microsoft exchange server.

Which buttons in sequence do I push in latest [version 16.27] Microsoft 365 to achieve this simple age old task?

Have spent 4 hours with microsoft support of various levels - all of whom found my questions strange and claimed never to have heard it before.

installed office 2019 - emails sending but not moving to sent items

HI All

Our emails are sending ok, but are not moving to the sent items folder.

This is a brand new installation of office 2019 with a new ost folder, using imap.

We have the box ticked save items to sent folder and are unable to find any thread with anything different.  The previous version of office 2007 saved to sent items using the same imap setup with an old ost file.

Regards, Ivan

error code 0x800704c7

I've tried repeatedly to upgrade to windows 10 only to get this error code at the end (0x800704c7) telling me the install was unsuccessful.  The upgrade process seems to go fine for a long time but gets hung up on the last step of checking for upgrades, then the error code to say nothing was installed?  I want to upgrade to windows 10.  I am using a purchased and activated version of windows 7 presently.  What is this error code telling me?  What can I do to fix the situation and upgrade to windows 10?  thanks, Ross (Neverlazy)

Turn off automatic language detection in Outlook

We are looking at turning this off for a number of users in our company and would like to automate the process of this. When I click the Set As Default button it says it is going to amend the NORMAL template, but I cannot find the template that it is amending? I have checked the Word normal template, but the date/time that this template was amended/changed is not the same time as I click the Set As Default button.

Outlook (cached mode) not updating folders from Exchange

I know this is a major ongoing problem; there are so many threads on various forums with the same issue. I have a few clients on Outlook 2010, 2013 and 2016 (all connected to Exchange 2010 SP3 via LAN) that are having problems with Outlook updating folders. Some clients with this config are working, but others are not.

Even if they click Send/Receive the Inbox folder doesn't update. They can send an email to themselves and not receive it unless the close and open Outlook or click Send/Receive menu, then Update folder.

In this image, I have sent an email at 11.35 to the user's Inbox but they haven't received it, even after clicking Send/Receive.

And as you can see from this image, the email has arrived (but only after closing and reopening Outlook):

The only other way to get the email is doing any of the following:

  • Choosing the Send/Receive menu then clicking Update Folder
  • Closing and re-opening Outlook (it Send/Receives on Open)
  • Choosing the Properties of the Inbox, then deleting the offline items for that folder.

But Outlook still shows the folder was last updated more than 15 mins earlier. Even though the email was received 8 mins ago.

You can see the Sync Stats for the Inbox folder aren't correct (this is missing recent emails), unless you perform any of the above steps:

The Outlook Connection Status appears fine:

When Outlook is autoconfigured I noticed that the Send/Receive group is configured like this by default:

If I tick the check box for "Include the selected account for this group" Outlook still doesn't update the Inbox unless it's closed and reopened.

It only works properly when Outlook is configured with Cached mode disabled. OWA is also obviously fine.

Steps I've tried (which have all been unsuccessful):

  • Clear Offline Items for the Inbox
  • Disable caching, close Outlook, delete the .ost file and recreate it by enabling caching.
  • Completely delete and recreate the Outlook profile
  • Disable Outlook add-ins
  • Start Outlook in safe mode (outlook.exe /safe)
  • Checked the MTU size on the server is set to max 1500
  • Disabled Antivirus

Can someone help with this please?

Cannot display the folder. Outlook cannot access the specified folder location. Could not open the item. Try again.

One of our users has an issue with open shared mailboxes. They will get from time to time the below message for some of the shared mailboxes they have access to. Closing and re-opening Outlook resolves the issue. I reduced the number of shared mailboxes that the user has access to, but the issue still occurs from time to time.

I have ran the below command and it shows the user has access to 157 folders. I am presuming this doesn't include shared mailboxes. Is there a way to check how many folders in total the user has access to which includes shared mailbox folders? Or are there any logs I can check when the issue occurs to see what is going on?

Get-MailboxFolderStatistics -Identity user@domain.com | Measure-Object | Select-Object -ExcludeProperty count

Cannot display the folder. Outlook cannot access the specified folder location. Could not open the item. Try again.

Outlook 2016 cannot connect to email server with SSL/TLS

The email server I connect to for email was recently moved, and now that I try to connect using outlook it is not working. However, I can connect directly to web mail on a browser and I can connect using my phone with no issues. No one else who connects to this email server with outlook is having the issue I am. This is occurring on both of my computers and they are running Windows 7 (64-bit) with Outlook 2016 (32-bit).

I have tested using both IMAP and POP settings using SSL/TLS (ports 993 and 465) and both of them give me the same error message:

“Log onto incoming mail server (IMAP): A secure connection to the server cannot be established.”

“Send test email message: Your server does not support the connection encryption type you have specified. Try changing the encryption method. Contact your mail server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP) for additional assistance.”

I have called my ISP to make sure they are not blocking those ports.

I also tested using IMAP without SSL/TLS using port 143 and outgoing port 587. This allows me to connect and see emails, however when I try to send emails I get the following error: 503 Valid RCPT command must precede DATA. However, even if this connection issue is resolved, I would prefer to connect using SSL/TLS.

Please let me know any other information that is needed to troubleshoot this issue. Thanks!
